Parents: all you need to know

Safety of your child is our prime consideration. Calshot is registered with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, as licensed to provide specified activities under the following headings: Watersports, Abseiling, Rock Climbing, Hill Walking and Mountaineering. Licence details can be confirmed by calling the Licensing Authority. Tel: 029 2075 5715.

We also adhere to the stringent safety standards of Hampshire County Council. Our holiday courses operate to the same high educational standards as our schools programme with excellent staff/student ratios and a high quality teaching programme. We adhere to and, in many cases exceed the safety standards laid down by the major governing bodies of sport. All watersports take place under the direct supervision of qualified British Canoe Union and Royal Yachting Association Instructors and all our other activities are taught by appropriately qualified staff. All of our holiday courses unless specifically stated include water activities and participants should be able to swim 50 metres in light clothing.

Duration

All residential holiday courses start at 1600 on Sunday afternoon, include high tea on arrival, and finish at 1400 on Friday. Non residential courses start at 0850 on Monday and finish each day at 1830, following evening meal, except Friday when the finish time is 1400.

Equipment

We provide all the specialist equipment required, including wetsuits, all of which is maintained to a high level by our professional technical staff.

Staff

Unlike many adventure holiday operators, Calshot runs for 12 months of the year and the majority of our teaching staff are permanent and full time. We have a rigorous and ongoing staff training programme. Details of all relevant instructional qualifications are available on request.

Accommodation

Children are accommodated in a mixture of twin, triple bunked and larger four to eight bunked rooms. Whenever possible we use the smaller rooms. All rooms have washbasins with hot and cold water. Ample toilets and showers are available on each corridor.
We try to meet all reasonable requests for friends of the same sex to share rooms.

Supervision

We offer a full activity programme throughout the day and evening.
Evening activities include competitions, problem solving and group tasks, badminton, table tennis, five-a-side football and an end of course disco. At night specialist residential staff will ensure the safety and wellbeing of your children and are on call at all times.

Parents

We are very aware that when sending your children to a residential centre you need to have total confidence in its ability to care for and look after your children. We are pleased to answer any questions you may have, discuss any issues with which you are concerned or arrange a visit, prior to booking. Please contact us to make an appointment.

Prices

There are no hidden extras in our fees. Prices include a full programme of activities, all specialist equipment, 24 hour supervision (residential), meals/accommodation as described and drinks at breaks. Children may want a small amount of pocket money to purchase souvenirs from our shop, to use the payphones and for those with an off site element to their programme some ice cream money!!! Pocket money can be looked after in the Centre’s safe if required.

£325 Non-residential includes lunches and evening meals
£380 Residential as non-residential plus 5 nights B&B.

GO FOR IT!

Watersports Adventure 10-13 and 13-16 years

A wet, wild and fun week based around Sailing, Canoeing and Windsurfing.
A brilliant way to try three of the most exciting watersports available, in a safe and fun environment. You will learn to sail an Optimist, Funboat or Pico dinghy, windsurf and canoe in the sheltered waters around the Centre. For the younger age group the week will also include an adventure day in the New Forest. A half day will also be spent taking part in the Centres’ landbased activities. The older age group will have the option to pursue one of the three activities to a higher level or take part in a canoe trip on the Beaulieu River. Whatever your age, no previous experience is needed and our highly experienced staff will ensure that you get the most from each sport. Be there if you dare!

RYA Dinghy Sailing

10–13 years and 13–16 years
An exciting week for those who want to specialise in the ever popular sport of sailing. Courses are based on the RYA Young Sailors Scheme and will give beginners and advanced sailors alike the opportunity to develop their skills under the guidance of our experienced instructors. Instruction takes place in small teaching groups and sheltered water with safety boats always in attendance. Certificates are provided free of charge. So as not to miss out on the centre’s exciting landbased activities, one day will be shore-based with the opportunity to take part in activities such as climbing, skiing and archery.

Stage One/Two

For those with little or no previous sailing experience this is a great introduction to the sport. All the basics will be introduced in a fun and exciting way.

Stage Three/Four

For those holding the Stage Two award or needing a re-cap on Stage Three this course will introduce more advanced sailing skills, and introduce young sailors to double handed boats.

Performance sailing/Spinnaker course

This course is designed to refine techniques, develop skills and make sailing more efficient. Topics covered include upwind performance, use of tell tales, better tacking and gybing, and an introduction to spinnakers.

Start Racing and Catamaran

Discover the fun and enjoyment of competitive sailing. No previous racing experience is required as all the basics of racing, including ‘go faster’ techniques, how to start and the basic rules are covered. By the end of the course youngsters should be ready to compete in their first club race. The race aspect of the course will use singlehanded mono hull dinghies.
Add a little more speed to your sailing by learning how to handle a catamaran. Our Dart 16’s are an excellent boat to introduce this fast and exciting branch of sailing.

Climbing NICAS level 2 13-16 years

This week will concentrate on climbing aiming to get the course members to level 2 of the National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme. Aimed at those of you with a interest in becoming climbers, some previous climbing experience may be useful but is not essential. You will be taught the skills to ascend our 14m high climbing walls safely and in style as well as how to abseil. The highlight of the week will be a day trip to real rock at Portland on the Thursday. This will give you the feel for the ‘real thing’. The programme will also include the option to try some of our other land based activities.
