woman paddling sea kayak imageCalshot is widely regarded as one of the country’s premier sea kayaking centres. It has a variety of teaching locations and instant access to more challenging waters, all with the Solent and the Isle of Wight as an impressive backdrop.


As a BCU Recognised Centre we offer courses at all levels, using an impressive fleet of over 100 kayaks and canoes. Our highly experienced BCU qualified team of coaches are ready to help, whether you have a problem keeping your kayak straight or are planning an advanced expedition.

Beginners BCU One Star Kayak

£84 Non-residential includes lunch
Time: 0900-1730 (Sat unless indicated)

A perfect course to learn the fundamentals and to be introduced to the fun and excitement of paddling your own boat. In the sheltered waters around Calshot Spit, one of our experienced instructors will go through all the strokes and safety considerations required to achieve the One Star award. This is an ideal introductory course.

Intermediate BCU Two Star Kayak

£150 Non-residential includes lunches
£165 Residential includes lunches, one night B&B and evening meal on 1st day

For paddlers who already possesses the basic skills, this course provides a balanced programme leading to the Two Star award. You will use both Kayaks and Canoes during the course and develop a good understanding of double and single bladed paddling. We won’t forget that paddling a kayak or canoe should be fun, whilst we introduce new techniques and skills to help develop your boat control and confidence.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking

If you are at or above BCU One Star level, this one day course is ideal for gaining an insight into this ever popular branch of kayaking. There will be an opportunity to try a variety of different boats and to take part in a short local journey.

Sea Kayak Adventures

If you have already cracked the basics, then these trips are the perfect way to extend your paddling and explore the coastline from a very different perspective.

Calshot-Lepe-Calshot

£84 Non-residential
Times: 0900-1700 (Sun)

This day paddle is an excellent first full day trip. Following the coastline from Calshot you will have excellent views across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight. En route there will be plenty to see, including racing yachts, commercial vessels and if lucky a close up view of an ocean liner. If time permits we will explore the entrance of the Beaulieu River. Lunch will be taken ashore before the return journey. This trip covers about seven miles. You should provide a packed lunch and drinks for this trip.

Pre-course experience – you should have completed a BCU one star course and an introduction to sea kayaking day before booking this course.

See the Needles from the Sea!

£190 Non-residential includes lunches

This trip will give you the opportunity to view one of Britain’s most famous coastal features from a very unique perspective. The two day course starts with a day recapping sea kayak skills, learning new skills and introducing some rescue techniques, as well as planning the journey to the Needles. Crossing to the island from Hurst Spit you will be able to see the splendour of your destination throughout the paddle passing close to Alum Bay, with it’s distinctive multi coloured cliffs before reaching your destination. The return journey will give you excellent views of the Needles Channel and Hurst Castle. The total distance covered will be about 9 miles.

Pre-course experience - you should have completed a BCU one star course and an introduction to sea paddling day before booking this course.

Outrigger Canoeing NEW!

Aloha! to the sport of outrigger canoeing. Outrigger canoeing pic
Hugely popular in Hawaii, the west coast of the United States and Australia, this is a little seen sport in the UK.

Join one of our half day courses to experience a very different and
exciting form of paddle sport.

No previous canoeing experience is required to paddle these stable six person boats, which are great fun, good exercise and a little bit different.

Once you have experienced a taster session why not join our day adventure within the Solent, weather permitting we might even make the Isle of Wight. Be ready for a few strange looks though!

Groups

Why not put together a group of friends or colleagues for a fun half day of paddling and racing. A variety of group sizes can be accommodated, with the session as competitive as you wish. This is an excellent activity to promote teamwork and communication. Dates can be organised to suit your availability. Contact our bookings office for more information.

Kayaking for Young People

Beginners BCU One Star Kayak

£70 Non-residential includes lunch
Time: 0900-1630

We offer kayaking courses based on the BCU coaching scheme. Operating in two age groups, 8-12 and 12-16, we introduce children to the fun and excitement of paddling their own boat. Instruction takes place in the sheltered waters around Calshot Spit or in our outdoor canoe pool. With a max student to instructor ratio of 8:1 each child will get plenty of feedback and guidance. With lots of games and activities it won’t be long before the group are setting off on their first mini adventure!

BCU Coaching Courses

We are able to organise courses at Levels One, Two and Three of the new BCU coaching scheme. If you are interested in attending a coaching course please contact our bookings department who will be able to advise you of planned courses or register your interest.

Other Courses

We are able to offer a range of coaching and higher level courses. For these courses we operate a waiting list and run courses on demand rather than programme set dates. If you are interested please contact our Bookings staff. We will contact you with possible dates when we have enough candidates to run a course.
Alternatively, organise your own group (minimum group size 4) and we will run a course just for you. Please contact us for further details.
