Healthy Eating

You have probably heard that the government has introduced new, higher standards for school meals from September 2007. School meals need to change because of worries that many children eat too much food with lots of fat, salt and sugar. This can lead to serious health problems now and later in their lives. Sweet fizzy drinks can also cause tooth decay and make children put on too much weight.

The law requires schools to offer healthier choices. The new standards mean more fresh food, including fruit and vegetables, and less deep fried food and manufactured meat products. Sweets, chocolates and crisps are not allowed. Calshot is Hampshire County Council owned and operated, the majority of its school users being HCC schools, so we must also apply those standards.

As we have always provided unlimited fresh fruit at all meals and prepared many of our cooked dishes on site from fresh ingredients, we already comply in most respects. The main changes are the introduction of filled baguettes and jacket potatoes, substitution of fruit juices for squashes, relegation of chips to one appearance per week and the disappearance of chocolate and icing sugar toppings from our home made cakes and biscuits. Also, confectionery and sugary drinks will only be available to adults, by request in the Bar. Similarly, Dining Room salt and sauce sachets will be available only to adults, from the dessert counter.

Currently we operate a 3 week menu cycle. For details click on one of these links:
Week One l Week Two l Week Three

We are confident that these improvements and amendments will be welcomed all our customers, children and adults alike. If you want to know more about the new Healthy Eating requirements, the School Food Trust has been set up to help parents, children and schools with the introduction of the new food standards. You will find a copy of the Standards and the guidance to introducing them on their website at: www.schoolfoodtrust.org.uk.
